Mr Ian Bayley

Ian Bayley was appointed to direct the Specialist Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in 1980 when Shoulder Surgery was in its infancy. He succeeded Professor Lipman Kessel who pioneered the concept of Specialist Shoulder practice in the UK. In his professional life time he has seen the practice of Shoulder Surgery emerge from Cinderalla Status into the mainstream of MSK practice when many services boast not one but several Shoulder Specialists. During this time Ian Bayley’s particular interests have been in the area of diagnosing difficult and resistant pain status; the development of a suite of shoulder replacements to deal with the full spectrum of the practical problems encountered in various pathologies; the development of a classification of shoulder instability, the better to understand the problem; the development of rehabilitation techniques and their fusion with surgical practice into a seamless holistic shoulder service.
