Course Objectives:

To provide the MSK practitioner with the core skills on:

  • Assessment and differential diagnosis of Upper Limb conditions.
  • Rationalisation of diagnostic interventions for common disorders as appropriate including:

Ø      Red flags and Masquerades

Ø      Ruling out the Cervical Spine in Upper Limb conditions

Ø      Advanced Neurological Examination

Ø      ‘Special tests’ – which have clinical utility?

Ø      Imaging when, what and why?


  • Symptom modification – including the use of the Mulligan Concept to inform both diagnostic and treatment utility
  • Rehabilitation of common disorders affecting the Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand including (amongst others):


Ø      Rotator Cuff Related Shoulder Pain

Ø      The Unstable Shoulder

Ø      Tennis Elbow

Ø      Golfer’s Elbow

Ø      Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Ø      De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Course Notes

Aims: This two-day course will introduce a systematic approach the assessment of the Upper Limb, and offer options for the management of Upper Limb conditions including exercise-based rehabilitation, manual therapy and discussion around the reasoned use of other therapeutic adjuncts. This course aims to equip the attendee with immediate ‘clinic-ready’ strategies, and to consider the person beyond the pathology. Andrew and Thomas will draw upon their combined experience of assessing and managing Upper Limb conditions in a variety of settings including NHS Practice, Private Practice, Musculoskeletal Service, First Contact Primary Care and Elite Sport. Andrew is a member of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society (BESS) and Thomas is a member of the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT).
